Üç Şerefeli Mosque (Three Balconies Mosque) was built by the order of Murad II between 1438 – 1447 as an authentic example of the public works during his reign.
There is no exact information as tho who the architect of the mosque was. In “Edirne Sarayları” book of Rıfat Osman, it is stated that the architect was “Amasyalı Ata” but there is solid ground support this.
Üç Şerefli Mosque has a special significance in Turkish-Islamic architecture since it is the first example of the shift from grand mosques with multiple domes to central domes that cover the whole place.
The central dome of the mosque, that is positioned on 6 pillars, covers a large rectanguler area. Tweo of the pillars are located independently in the middle and four of them are in the walls and they form a hexagon altogether. This geometrical design of the mosque served as a prototype for many hexagonal structures by Sinan the Architect.
