One of the projects that Mayor of Edirne, Recep Gürkan declared in the mayoral elections, was the establishment of Edirne City Museum in Edirne, the city of history, culture and museum. Following the Mayorial elections, studies about coming real the project have been initiated urgently.
Instruction on the establishment and operation of T.R. Edirne Municipality, Edirne Urban Memory Museum have been discussed at the meeting of Edirne Municipal Council on 3 September 2014 and accepted by unanimous vote.
It has been applied with the Project named as “Preserving and Living With Its Historical Values : Edirne Urban Memory Museum” for Thracia Development Agency’s Small-scale Infrastructure Financing Program for 2015 in order to establish the museum in the Hafizaga Mansion which owned by the Governorsip of Edirne and has been allocated to the Edirne Municipality for 25 years in previous years.
As a result of the evaluations, the project “Preserving and Living With Its Historical Values : Edirne Urban Memory Museum” was accepted on August 31, 2015. In this context, by the initiatives of the Mayor, Recep Gürkan, the propert rights of the mansion has passed on May 18, 2015 to Edirne Municipality. Edirne City Museum has come into service on Friday, May 5, 2017, after nearly 20 months of work. Museum has entrance section and 2 more floors.
