As stated in the study published by Arzu Diktaş in 2008, the first settlements known in Edirne and its surroundings were the Odriss and Bettegers from the Thracian tribes. The first tribes to settled started to live in the area where Edirne city center is located today. It is thought that they established an open city and market place here. Between 1400-1200 BC, the Achaeans became the owners of the region this time. After this period, Edirne began to be known as „police“, that is, the city. B.C. The region came under Persian rule in 510 BC. In 460, it was again captured by Odriss, one of the first settlers. B.C. While Macedonians dominated the region this time in 340, the name of the city began to be known as Orestia. B.C. Conquered by the Romans in 168, Orestia was named Hadrianapolis. After the Roman Empire split in two, Hadrianapolis remained under Byzantine control. It was captured by the Bulgarians in 813, but was left under the Byzantine Empire again only 2 years later by treaty. In 1361, the name of the city, which finally joined the Ottoman Empire, changed to Edirne and then began to be the capital of the Ottoman Empire. Edirne, which was the capital until Istanbul was conquered in 1453, never lost its importance even if it lost its title of capital. Continuing to be the favorite of the sultans, Edirne remained a lively commercial and administrative center.
